The last time Sony released an X series system was the famous X505, a system which will go down in history as one of Sony’s most memorable and lusted after computers. The new Sony Vaio X is notable for its insane thinness (0.5-inches), light weight (1.6 pounds), and extended battery life (up to 17 hours with a slice battery). Of course the slice battery, which is included, bumps the system weight up to a portly 2.4 pounds.

There was a lot of speculation about the price of the Sony Vaio X series, with some people guessing prices of over $2000. It doesn’t seem impossible based on Sony’s recently killed high-end ultraportable, the TT, but the Vaio X will end up coming in at $1299 with a 64 GB SSD and $1499 with a 128 GB. There is a catch though–this isn’t a replacement for the TT or even just another ultraportable. The Vaio X is powered by an Intel Atom processor, the Z550. That’s a serious snag, and some skeptics might say that this is a $1300 netbook. Not exactly what people wanted to see after Sony’s tone-deaf Vaio P release less than a year ago.
